Seaman Max Reynolds was born and raised in Newton, and was the son of James W. Reynolds, of East Second Street. He was serving in the United States Navy on board the steamship Minnesota as cook when he was stricken with Cerebro Spinal Fever, and removed to the United States Naval Hospital at Norfolk, Virginia, where he died May 26, 1917, age 22 years, 5 months, and 22 days.
