Private Eaarl Floyd Alfred Hood, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Hood, of Newton, was born May 24, 1897, at El Dorado, Kansas, and came to Newton with his parents in 1908. He completed the common school work in the city schools and later was employed here, the last 2 years before joining the Army, being with the Pintsch Gas Company.
He registered for the draft on his 21st birthday, May 24, 1918. He went to Camp Funston August 30. He was sent to Camp Knox, West Point, Kentucky, and assigned to the 68th field artillery. His regiment was ready to be mustered out last November, but he was transferred to a medical detachment with the 69th field artillery, and he remained in that organization until his death, March 9, 1919, caused by pneumonia.
His father was notified of his illness, and went to Camp Knox, being at the side of his soldier son during the 2 days before his death. His body was brought here and buried with military honors in Greenwood Cemetery. Private Hood was a member of the Newton Baptist Church, and a young man of many sterling qualities.
