Saturday Afternoon Crash Claims Two Lives
Two people lost their lives in an accident Saturday afternoon on Interstate 135 near the Newton outlet mall.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash report online, those killed in the accident were Denice K. Bina, 65, of Marion and Raymond C. Bina, 71, of Marion. Both had safety restraints on. Their relatives have been notified, according to the KHP report.
At about 2:10 p.m. on Saturday, the Kansas Highway Patrol was asked to assist Harvey County in working the two-vehicle accident at mile marker 28.
One vehicle, driven by Denice Bina, was a Lincoln MKZ, and the other vehicle was a 2019 freightliner semi 18-wheeler, said Trooper Chad Crittenden, public information office with the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The Lincoln was headed southbound, while the other was northbound. It’s not determined why yet, but the Lincoln crossed into the median and went into the northbound lane sideways, Crittenden said.
The front of the semi struck the passenger side of the Lincoln in the northbound lane. Both occupants of the Lincoln were killed.
Crittenden said the KHP has taken over the investigation. On Saturday, all northbound lanes were closed, starting at mile marker 25 at the K-196 exit, and they were expected to be closed for the next two to three hours. (By Wendy Nugent, Newton NOW, Newton, Kansas. July 17, 2021).
