Haun, Charles Howard

The Newton Kansan

Charles Howard Haun passed away at home on his rural Newton farm on Saturday (June 12, 2010) after a long, valiant fight with cancer. Howard was born on Father’s Day, June 17, 1928, in Newton to Charles and Della (Artz) Haun.

He was a 1946 graduate of Whitewater High School and lived his entire life in Harvey County. Howard married Wynona Gifford on April 9, 1966, in Wichita. A lifelong farmer, he had a love and dedication for working the land. He not only managed his own farm, but also did custom farming for many years. He was active in agricultural organizations and causes, and also was a sales representative for various farm products. He enjoyed fixing things, from tractors to furniture. He loved woodworking and once helped his daughter and son-in-law build interactive learning tables for a children’s museum in Minnesota.

Early in life, he accepted the Lord and became a member of the First Christian Church of Newton, serving several years as a deacon and board member. He also attended the First Church of the Nazarene with his wife, and the two served as Meals on Wheels volunteers for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Wynona, of the home; daughter, Marlys Arnold and her husband Alan of Kansas City, Mo.; aunt, Bonnie Palmer of Newton; sister-in-law, Marie Haun of Wichita; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul; two infant siblings; and nephew, Kent.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friends also may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday. A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church of Newton. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent in his name for the American Cancer Society or the Progressive Home Health and Hospice in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 64114.
