Noland, Melvin

Melvin L. Noland, 84, died Monday (June 14, 2010) at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born on Oct. 5, 1925, in Sedgwick, the son of Robert Elmer and Sylvia Shumaker Noland.

He graduated from Sedgwick High School in 1943. During World War II, Melvin served in the U.S. Army, where he played drums in the Army band. He married Elnyr Isabel Mauth on June 6, 1948, in Bazine. Melvin and Elnyr moved to Wichita shortly after they married. They lived there until 1977 when they moved to Sedgwick.

Elnry died on Aug. 7, 1999. Melvin moved to Wichita in August 2007. He had been a member of the Sedgwick United Methodist Church, the American Legion and enjoyed spending time at the Sedgwick Senior Center.

Survivors include two sons, James Noland and his wife Diana of Wichita, and Tom Noland of Wichita; two daughters, Kathy Cowan and her husband Larry of Sedgwick, and Marsha Carlton and husband Randy of Radcliff, Ky.; one sister, Joyce Fayhon of Pearl River, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother Eugene.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family receiving friends between 6 and 8 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sedgwick United Methodist Church. Internment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sedgwick. Memorials have been established with Sedgwick Senior Center, Sedgwick United Methodist Church and the Sedgwick American Legion. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
