Haffner, John

The Newton Kansan

John E. Haffner, 77, died Monday (June 7, 2010) at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. He was born on May 29, 1933, in Quinter to John and Frances (Lang) Haffner.

On June 16, 1956, he married Joyce Leiker in Park. She survives of the home. John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Newton. He served his country in the U.S. Army and retired from Hay and Forage Industries in Hesston, after 29 years and five months. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and spending time with his loving family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Haffner; one son, Mike Haffner and his wife Tami of Sabetha; four sisters, Mary Rohling of Hutchinson, Elizabeth Miller of Hays, Jennie Eberle of Oakley and Anna Albers of Selden; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Steve, Adam, Lambert, Joseph and Raymond Haffner; and two sisters, Theresia Schlick and Veronica Schlick.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jim Mainzer presiding. Memorials may be left with St. Mary’s School Building Fund in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
