Royer, Joana (Witherspoon)

The Newton Kansan

Joana Mae (Witherspoon) Royer died peacefully at her home Friday (May 14, 2010) in rural Boulder County, Colorado, with her loved ones at her bedside. She had been desperately ill with heart, lung and kidney disease for several years. She is now with her son, Rex Martin, and resting in the arms of our Lord.

Joana was born on May 12, 1931, in Newton. She was adopted two weeks later by Clifford and Nora Witherspoon, now deceased, and spent her formative years in Newton.
She graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1949. She was well known for her musical talent and playing the flute. She was baptized in the First Christian Church in 1943 and was consistent in her faith until the end. She married Harold Royer, also from Newton and the Christian Church, on Jan. 23, 1950.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years; brother-in-law Donald Jack; sons, Donald Clifford and Richard Russell; four grandsons, Donald Harlen, Brian, Russell and Theodore; and two great-grandchildren, Caden and Danica Royer. Memorial Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder, CO 80301.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Boulder and Broomfield Counties.
