Graybill, Russell



He retired in 1965 after serving 10 years with the Wichita Eagle and Beacon as a staff writer and features editor. Born in Moundridge, he attended Newton schools, Bethel College and the University of Kansas.

He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Graybill. His father was a former lieutenant governor of Kansas.

He began his military career prior to World War II as a National Guard commander of Newton's old Co. F of the 35th Infantry Division. He entered active military duty in 1939 and commanded an infantry battalion in the Pacific Theater during the Leyte and Okinawa operations.

Following the war he served in Germany with American occupation forces and later was stationed at Fort Riley. He retired from the army as a colonel. He was awarded the Bronze Star with clusters, Combat Infantry Badge, American Defense Medal and American Theater ribbon.

In earlier years he was employed on the Kansan news staff and had worked with the state oil tax revenue office before joining the Eagle.
