Lewis A. Prouty was born at New Boston, Ill., October 20, 1852. He died at Newton, Kansas, July 30, 1943 at the age of 90 years, 9 months and ten days.

He was the son of Amos and Mary Stone Prouty. On July 28, 1871, he was united in marriage to Blanche Pullin. A few days after Mr. Prouty,s marriage, his father, Amos Prouty started for Kansas. Six sons and three daughters with their families accompanied him. All the family were talented musicians so on the trip west they spent their evenings singing and playing musical instruments. August 29, 1971 they reached their destination in Macon township, where they selected their farms and settled down.

They underwent all the trials of pioneers, grasshoppers, Texas fever which destroyed all their cattle, fires and lawless tribes of Indians.

Mr. Prouty resided on his farm 66 years, and served his community in various ways.

Mr. and Mrs. Prouty were the parents of six children. One daughter died in infancy. A daughter, Mrs. Lynn Winger passed away in 1919. A son Clyde in 1937. Surviving him are: Mrs. Bertha White of Wichita, Mrs. Vella Hodgson of the home and Fred W. of Newton.

Mr. Prouty fell and injured his hip six years ago and since that time has been confined to his room. Since Mrs. Prouty's death, he was taken care of by his two daughters. The past six years Mr. and Mrs. Hodgson have cared for him. He was patient and uncomplaining through all his illness and his death ended the last of the family of Amos Prouty
