Prouty, Amos



Mr. Prouty was twice married. He was married July 28, 1835, to Mary L. Stone, who died February 1877 leaving nine children; William H., Simon H., John M., Franklin A., Mary E., Henry W., Alice J., Lulu A., and Lewis A. He was married a second time to Mrs. Susan Summers February 25, 1880. Including his own descendants and his step children, his progeny now living represent five generations making a total of 134 as follows: Grand children 32, great grand children 47, great, great grand children 2, son-in-law one, daughters-in-law four,, grand sons-in-law, 17, grand daughter-in-law, four, great grand son-in-law, four, great grand daughter-in-law one, step sons 2,step daughters 3,step grand children 6.Since becoming a resident of Harvey county, Mr. Prouty has taken prominent part in county affairs. He was a member of the original board of county commissioners at the time the county was organized, and was appointed a second time to fill a vacancy and elected to fill one term. He was justice of the peace, in Illinois and Kansas, thirty-five years and during that time married more than an hundred couples. He also held various township offices.
