Obituary

John Murray Prouty was born at New Boston, Ill., February 21, 1844 and resided there until he came to Kansas. His marriage to Sara E. Noble occurred at New Boston, January 27, 1865, and they journeyed to Kansas in March 1871 and homesteaded a farm in Macon township. Here the family resided for many years but their later years were spent living in Newton.

When but a young man he enlisted as a private in Co. G, 27th regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, in 1863 at Springfield, Ill. He was wounded by a musket ball striking him in the left breast during a skirmish near Calhoun, Georgia, and it is quite a remarkable incident that the bullet was never removed from his body. He was discharged from the service August, 1865 at Davenport.

The Proudy ancestors and family were distinguished for their war service. One of his forefathers, was a minute man in the Revolutionary war. His father and one brother served in the same company with him in the Civil War, his son served two years in the Spanish American war, and one of his grandsons in World War I, died of influenza in Camp Greenleaf, Ft. Oglethorp
