NEWTON — Eleanor M. Mathews died on Wednesday (May 12, 2010) at Kansas Christian Home in Newton.
She was born on Feb. 22, 1918, in rural Walton to Frederick and Augusta Sattler.
She married Horace N. Mathews Jr. on Feb. 14, 1942, in Flagstaff, Ariz. He preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1983.
She retired from Beechcraft Aircraft and was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church of Wichita. She was an avid gardener and canned vegetables from her garden.
She was actively involved in church activities.
After her husband's death, she participated in the Senior Olympics, where she won nine individual events. She competed in the Senior Olympics well into her 70s.
She is survived by her son, Kent and Jogene Mathews of Newton; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Pamela Ingram; three brothers; and five sisters.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Wichita.
A committal service will be at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrews Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home
