Smith, Samuel
Samuel H. Smith was born in Goshen, Elkhart Co., Indiana on December 4th, 1842. On November 23rd, 1863 he was married to Catharine Kercher at Goshen, Ind. where they lived on a farm until 1873, when the family moved to Peabody, Kansas. In 1879 they moved to Newton, Kansas where they resided ever since. In the early days Mr. Smith was employed at the Barnett & Foltz Hardware store and later was employed in the car department of the Santa Fe, where he was a faithful employee until he was pensioned a few years before his death. For 18 months Mr. Smith was employed at the Hayter & Holbert Hardware store.
Mr. Smith was a faithful member (of 30 years) of the Salem Evangelical church of Newton. About seven years before his death Mr. Smith became ill and spent time as a patient at the Santa Fe hospital in Topeka. On December 5th the year before his death, he went to Bethel Hospital, where he remained until his death.
Mr. Smith was survived by his wife Catharine and four children, Mrs. Frank Stevens of Topeka, Mrs. W.M. Bowlus of Fremont, Ohio, W.K. Smith and Mrs. Josephine Williamson. A son Daniel passed away at the age of six. Mr. Smith also left behind 22 grand-children, 12 great-grandchildren and three sisters Mrs. Lizzie Landis and Mrs. John Henry Loucks of Canton, Ks. and Mrs. P.N. Hamilton of Pigeon Michigan.
Funeral services were held at the family's residence at 328 East First Street on Monday afternoon at 2:30. Conducted by Rev. C. F. Iwig and Rev. J. K. Young. Internment is at Greenwood Cemetery.
