Robert Sherman Crandall, 72, retired Newton Postal clerk, died early today at the home, 2215 N. Main St. he had been in failing health for sometime and seriously ill the past six days.
Native of Newton, he was born April 3, 1883 and spent his entire life here. His parents were Robert W. and Sarah Ann Crandall.
He attended the Newton schools, Bethel College and Spaulding Business College of Kansas City.
Mr. Crandall was employed at the post office for 44 years and served as assistant postmaster for a short time until his health failed. A grower of shrubs and flowers, Mr. Crandall was associated with his father in the nursery and landscape business and later was proprietor of Crandall Nursery.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church, Newton Lodge 142 A. F. and A. M. Chapter and Commandery and was active in Boy Scout work.
Mr. Crandal's first wife, the former Virgina Whitehead, died April 11, 1939. They were married June 4, 1913.
He was married June 6, 1940 at Iola to Virginia Belle Smith, who survives.
Besides his widow, survivors include two sons, Kent and Allen of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Sadie Cook and Mrs. Orva Black of Hutchinson, Mrs. Bessie Finley of Los Angeles; two brothers, A. W. of Altadena, Calif., and Harrison of Moon, Wyo.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Moody's Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Clarence J. Borger will officiate and entombment will be in Greenwood Abbey.
