When twelve years of age she came to Washington county, Kansas, settling with her parents on a farm near Koloko. On December 14, 1887, she was married to Fred J. Benedict who died March 28, 1889. To this union was born a son, Fred Foster. On November 7, 1895, she was married to A. E. Houghton, also a resident of Washington county, having taken a homestead near Weltbote, Kansas, in 1869, and living there until 1903. A little daughter, Ruth Evelyn was born to them and was with them for six years, passing away soon after they came to Newton to make their home, to the great sorrow of her parents.
She became a member of the Baptist church when quite young and was always a faithful member. She was a faithful wife ad mother and a helpful friend and neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand to the sick and afflicted.
Newton is richer for having had Mrs. Houghton in its midst and sorrows deeply at her passing on.
