Black, John P.
July 17, 1919. John P. Black was born near Rushville, Indiana, May 8, 1831, and passed away July 15, 1919 aged 88 years 2 months and 7 days, at his home 1214 South Kansas Ave., Newton, Kans. He was twice married, first to Sarah E. Jefferson, March 6, 1851, and to this marriage one child was born, Mrs. Jane Abernathy who is now living in Rushville, Ind.. After the death of his first wife, he was married to Nancy A. Calfee, Dec. 12, 1854. Five children were born, none of whom are now living. Mr. Black served in the Union army during the civil war, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Following his return he remained with his family in Illinois until about 1884 when he moved to Kansas. He was a loyal and faithful member of the Christian church from boyhood, and his life was one of consistent christianity. His aged wife, one daughter and a number of grandchildren are left to morn his death.
