William Henry Evans, 80, died suddenly while working in his garden at Mission, Kans., Thursday afternoon. He formerly lived here.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Draper Funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. John Covey, rector of St. Mathews Episcopal Church in charge. Burial will be in state at the funeral home until time for the rites.
Mr. Evans is survived by his widow, two daughters, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Evans of the home; and Mrs. Billie Jean Pebly of Colorado Springs; a son George Phillip Evans of the home; a brother, Eugene F. Evans of Los Angeles, and five grandchildren. A son preceded him in death.
He was born in Newton March 28, 1878, the son of Benjamin F. and Ophelia Yocum Evans, and was married to Miss Nettie Johnson in 1916. The family lived at 1325 Main until 1952 when they moved to Mission.
He worked with his father building waterworks in Kansas and Oklahoma, and later associated with a brother in Evans Brothers Hardware Store here.
He was a life member of the Newton Masonic Lodge, and a member of the local units of the Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar and Order of Eastern star. He was past commander of the local Knights Templar commandery. The Masonic lodge will have charge of graveside services.
