Mrs. Christina Harlan, 88, pioneer Newton resident and widow of L. G. Harlan, died Wednesday evening at 7:45 at Axtell Christian Hospital following a long illness. She was admitted to the hospital a week ago after suffering a stroke.
A native of Sunbury, Pa., Mrs. Harlan was born July 12, 1864, the daughter of John and Charlotte Bourne, and lived in this community for 71 years.
She was married to Mr. Harlan an early day settler of Harvey county on March 22, 1881 in Newton. His death occurred Aug. 26, 1926.
The family home was at 923 North Pine for many years and Mrs. Harlan had recently been residing at the Hollister home west of Newton.
She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal church, the St. Cecilia guild and Woman's auxiliary, and was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include these nieces, Mrs. Helen Heydon of Tulsa, Okla., Irma Bourne, Mrs. Charlotte Radka and Mrs. C. W. Young of Newton; a nephew, Bryant Nolder of Chicago; a great niece, Mrs. Glenn Warhurst of Newton.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 at the Draper Funeral chapel, with Rev. W. R. Scott officiating, and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
