Geneva Jane Anduss, 64, of Newton, longtime owner of The Corner Lunch, died Saturday (June 3, 1989) at her home. Services will be at 2p.m. Tuesday at the First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Micheal Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
She was born Geneva Jane Noland July 3, 1924, in Newton, the daughter of Fred and Zola Mae (Crabtree) Noland. She married Melvin J. Anduss Aug 28, 1941, at Belleville. He died Dec. 14, 1985. She was owner-operator of the Corner Lunch cafe since July 1946, when she started the restaurant . She was joined by her late husband upon his return from military service.
The Corner Lunch is the oldest restaurant in Newton operating under one ownership and expanded twice during its 43 years. Most recently, her daughter Cindy Klein helped run the business during Mrs. Anduss' illness.
In recent years, Mrs. Anduss started a petition drive to save the Santa Fe Railway's train sheds (canopies) from demolition, spawning publicity that delayed their dismantling by the railway long enough for the Newton Jaycees and Harvey County Builders Association to step in and preserve one row, which today stands in Newton's Military Park at Oak and Broadway.
Mrs. Anduss was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters Judy and Cindy and two sisters Elizabeth and Louise.
