Ashbaugh, Rev. Lewis S.

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, June 23,1881

GONE TO REST

On last Saturday the people of our city and county were pained with grief on hearing of the death, at Wichita, of Rev. L.S. Ashbaugh, father of the editor of the KANSAN, and a resident of this city. Rev. Ashbaugh had been severely afflicted for some time past, and about four weeks ago went to Wichita, hoping to find relief; but he continued to decline, and on Friday evening, passed quietly away, surrounded by his companion and some of his children. Mr. Ashbaugh was well known throughout the country. He was born at Ripley, Brown county, Ohio in 1821; was educated in Cincinnati at the Eclectic Medical College, and practiced medicine for a few years. He served as a captain in the late war. He made a trip to California in his younger days and was wrecked on his return home near one of the Cuba Islands and lost all he had accumulated while on his trip. While quite a youth he was licensed an exhorter in the M. E. church. Since the war he has been engaged in the active ministry, traveling in the Iowa Conference until about 1875, when he entered the south Kansas Conference. About two years ago he was,on the account of ill health, placed on the superannuated list of his conference. During last summer his health improved somewhat, and he did some very active work for the temperance cause by lecturing in many places, He was revered by all who knew him, and in his death Harvey county lost one of her best citizens and the church a faithful and zealous worker. The large concourse of people who followed his remains to the cemetery showed how he was appreciated among us. He died as he had lived, trusting in the religion he promulgated to the people for so many years. He leaves a companion and six children to morn his loss.
His children listed in the 1870 Federal census.
