Bender, Louis

The Newton Kansan

Louis James Bender, well known Newton citizen and a retired Santa Fe conductor, died this morning at 8:30, March 21, at the Halstead hospital, where he had been a patient since March 10. Mr. Bender had been ill for some time. "Lew" Bender, as he was familiarly known among his railroad associates and many personal friends, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Bender, both deceased, and was born in Newton, Aug. 7, 1881, making him past 67 years old. He never married, but maintained his home at 220 East Second street, where for many years the comforts of a home was looked after by Alma Meschke, faithful housekeeper. he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Leota Shevers, New York City, and Mrs. Lee Williams, Denver, Colo. He was an honored member of the Brotherhood of Railway Conductors, a clean living, highly respected citizen. Funeral services will be held at the Moody's Funeral Chapel Thursday, March 24 at 2:00 p. m., burial will be made in the family lot in Greenwood cemetery.The Newton Kansan.
