Carter, William W

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, Monday, November 23,1931

William W. Carter, long time Havey county farmer and resident of Newton, at 202 West Ninth, died at six o,clock Sunday evening at the Axtell Christian hospital where he was taken at nine o,clock the same morning. Mr. Carter got up about three o,clock Sunday morning to go to the front door to investigate the rainfall, and as he turned to leave the door, fell breaking his hip. He was unable to arouse his wife, who is hard of hearing, or his son who sleeps upstairs, and he lay there for three hours. He was not in great pain and had the presence of mind to cover himself with rugs as best he could.

When he roused his his son at six o,clock he was assisted to bed, as his injuries were not thought to be serious. At nine o,clock, however, he was taken to hospital where X-rays showed a very bad break of the hip, but he was quite comfortable during the day and at supper time ate a hearty meal and was telling the nurses how well he felt when he was stricken with embolism, dying less than ten minutes later.

Mr. Carter was a familiar and loved figure about the streets of Newton. In spite of his advanced years he went everyday to town, enjoying his visits with business men about the streets. he was a retired farmer.

He was born Feb. 24, 1843 in Burford, Canada. He came to the United States while still a young man and on Oct. 10, 1873 was married at Dubuque, Iowa, to Joanna L. Condon. His wife with four children survive.

The funeral service will be held at the Sprinker Mortuary on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o,clock, the Rev. Joseph E. Coe, officiating, with entombment in Greenwood Abby.
