Charlsen, Charles C

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, Tuesday, January 10, 1928.

Charles Charlsen, one of Newton's oldest citizens and pioneers was born on May 15, 1846, in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. When but a lad of eight years his parents were taken from him to the better world beyond. He came to America in a sail boat in 1864, at the age of seventeen, landing in Philadelphia and later going to Lancaster, Penn. From there he went to St. Louis and in 1871 he came to Wichita, Kansas, coming to Newton three years later in 1874, where he lived nearly fifty-four years until the grim reaper took him from our midst.

He was married on June 15, 1888, in McPherson, Kansas. During the early days in Newton he operated a soda factory and a brick kiln bur for the last forty years he was in the ice and produce business. It was in the interest of his business, a few days ago, that he went out on the ice on Sand creek to inspect it for the purpose of filling his ice house when he fell. He suffered a stroke of paralysis, incident to the hard fall, and never regained consciousness, passing away Thursday night, Jan. 5, 1928, at 11:30, at his home, 811 Elm, having attained the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 21 days.

Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn his departure, four children: Mrs. Earl Lewis of Beloit, Kansas, Mrs. Charles Haynes of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Charles and George of Newton, and a host of friends and acquaintances.

May he rest in peace.
