Arthur C. Gates, 81, of 326 Allison, retired Santa Fe Railway conductor and pioneer Newton resident, died early today at Bethel Deaconess Hospital.
Mr. Gates was born Aug. 21, 1882 in Hillsboro, Ill., the son of Charles and Cumi Gates, and had lived in Newton for 79 years.
He was married here Nov. 14, 1906 to Emma Fluke.
Mr. Gates began work for the Santa Fe in 1905, was promoted to conductor in 1909 and retired in 1954.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Order of Railroad Conductors.
In addition to his widow, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ervin (Evelyn L.) Belgard of rural Newton and Mrs. R. H. (Bernice) Anderson of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother Alpha of Newton; a sister, Mrs. Carrie McCullum of Glendale, Calif.; two half sisters, Mrs. Oscar Highberger of Wichita and Mrs. Charles Lowey of Glendale; tow granddaughters and one great grandson.
Services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Draper's Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul T. Edwards of St. Luke United Presbyterian Church will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
