Fred W. Spudig, resident of Newton for more than 50 years passed away at six o'clock Friday evening, Oct. 23, following a stroke of paralysis four days before.

Mr. Spudig was employed as a boiler-maker for the Santa Fe railroad here for many years, retiring about fifteen years ago. since retiring he made gardening his hobby and the lovely fresh fruit and vegetables and the beautiful flowers he grew at his home at 435 East Eighth were a source of just pride for him. He sold some of that which he grew to augment his income, but gave away much which also gave him pleasure as well as those upon whom he showered his lovely gifts.

Fred W. Spudig was born in Fuersten Werder, Marienburg, Germany on April 17, 1849 making him 87 years, six months and six days at the time of his death. He was married here to Anna E. Becker, who passed away a number of years ago.

Children surviving are Mrs. Mary Hartenberger, Hutchinson; Mrs. Fred Brant, Salina and Fred Spudig, Ridgway, Colo. A. F. Hartenberger of this city is a grandson.
