The Newton Kansan
Kansan, Wednesday, October 27, 1891.
The funeral of Dr. Conrad will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o,clock. The services will be held at the family residence on West Broadway, conducted by Revs. J. C. Miller and A. Beatty.
I. D. Conrad was born in Holland Run, Pa., October 18, 1934. The first forty eight years of his life was spent in his native state. He made medicine his chosen profession, ad began practicing shortly after attaining his majority. In twenty five years following, he labored in Shamokin and Beavertown, Pa.
On March 31, 1861, he was married to Lydia Beissell at Green Briar, Pa. Five children are left to comfort the sorrowing wife in her declining days: Elmer, Anson, Mrs. F. J. Berry of Chicago, Weir and Kimber. Mrs. Berry was at her fathers bedside when the summons came. One brother at Holland Run, and a sister at Treverton, Pa., survive the doctor. Dr. Conrad was devoted to his profession. he never sought office of any kind. While in Pennsylvania he belonged to the I. O. O. F., but after coming to Kansas dropped the order.
In March, 1882, he decided to cast his lot in Newton, where he remained till his work on earth was finished. He built up a lucrative practice and had friends without number. He was a genial man to meet, and his demise will be a source of sorrow to many.
His death was caused by his love for his profession. he was of rugged physique and like many other physicians, thought no strain too severe for his body. In the winter 1884-5, while making a professional call twenty miles from Newton in a severe storm, he was nearly frozen, and for weeks afterward was confined to his room. The shock weakened his system and was the remote cause of his death. Wednesday evening of last week he received an apoplectic stroke, and remained in a comatose state until yesterday afternoon.
