She came to Kansas in 1877 and settled in Marion County; moved to Newton, Kansas in 1882 and located on West Ninth street where she resided until the death of her husband, after which she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Edna Downing. She was converted and united with the First Baptist church, there being no colored churches here. Later she united with the C. M. E. church of which she was a faithful member until the Lord called her home. She was a devoted wife and mother in every sense of the words, kind and loving and always willing to do for others and especially devoted to children all of whom loved her. She never complained during her illness, but passed away Saturday, April 10, in a peaceful sleep from which she never awakened. She leaves to mourn her death the above named children, thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of friends who loved her.
