Newton and Harvey county lost one of its's most highly esteemed citizens when on Saturday, February 3, 1940 A. L. (Lowe) Egy passed thru the gates of this life at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 24 days.
Albert Lorenzo Egy was born at Wenona, Illinois, September 9, 1861 and as a small lad moved with his parents to Hamilton, Mo. When he was 10 years of age, his family moved to harvey county Kansas, arriving in Newton on September 18, 1871. The family lived here until 1873 when the house was moved to their farm in Highland township. Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Egy reared their family on this farm. and their Lowe continued to live for 41 years. During many of these years he conducted the affairs of the farm and carried on extensive stock raising operations. On January 1, 1914, he retired.
On March 17, 1913, Mr. Egy was united in marriage to Miss Louise Bessmer and they have made their home continuously in Newton since that time.
For many years Mr. Egy has been without his eyesight, but he always kept well posted and fully abreast of affairs of the world. his wife being a good reader, they enjoyed many happy hours together. Also, until ill health prevented, he came down town regularly and visited with a group of companions in a club known as the "Sunshine Club," where topics of the day were discussed. A tribute that was recently published concerning him after he had been in the community exactly 68 years stated, "He helped to lay the foundation of a great state, and the best community on the face of the earth, which might have been different, but for Lowe Egy, and others like him."
Mr. Egy leaves his wife, Mrs. Louise (Bessmer) Egy, a brother Hal Egy, of this city, two sisters, Mrs. Grace Rapp, Valley Center, Kansas, and Mrs. May Tangeman, Lawton, Oklahoma, and many other relatives and close friends.
The passing of Mr. Egy takes from our midst one of the earliest pioneers of the county. he was active in community affairs, and made a large place for himself in the estimation of his fellow citizens.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 6, 1940, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian church, with his pastor, Rev. Frederick E. Black, officiating. Honorary casket bearers were Ezra Branine, James Nicholson, Ralph Stone, John Dreier, Albert F. Steiner and John Becker. Active casket bearers were john McCuish, James Gray, Leonard Nelson, Kenneth Speir, James Feitz and Carl Hay. He was laid to rest in Greenwood Abbey.
