Eastman, Verla May



Verla May Eastman, 92, of Newton, died Monday (Sept. 13, 2010) at Newton Medical Center.

She was born on March 25, 1918, in El Dorado, the daughter of Robert Thomas and Flossie Dale O’Dell Goodson. Verla graduated from El Dorado High School and Hutchinson Business College. During World War II, Verla was employed in a war plant in Auburn, Ind.

In May 1948, she married the Rev. H.T. Eastman in McPherson. Their ministry in evangelism of 20 years was served in the United States, Canada, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. They settled in Colorado Springs. Verla worked at Nazarene Bible College for nine years.
The Rev. Eastman died in 1985. After retirement, Verla moved to Newton.

She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Wichita.

Survivors include three stepchildren, Maurine Epple, Tim Eastman and Dan Eastman, all of Pueblo, Colo.; several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Deloris Johanson and husband Melvin of Maize; one brother, Albert Goodson and wife Carol of McPherson; and several nieces and nephews.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one stepdaughter, Sylvia; and brothers, Jim, Marvin, Bob, Joe, Morris and George.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene in Wichita. Graveside services and interment will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the McPherson City Cemetery. A memorial has been established with Shepherds Fold Ministries and First Church of the Nazarene.
