Cleopatra P. Mills was born in Crab Orchard, Kentucky, March 11, 1824. She moved with her parents to Monroe County, Missouri in 1830. The following year her mother died and the little girl of seven years then lived with an uncle three years and there after with a married sister until maturity. August 25, 1846 she was married to James H. Fugate of Schuyler county, Missouri, where they resided until 1864 when they moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, and lived their until 1886. In September of that year they came to Newton which has since been their home. To this union there were born four sons and a daughter; John H. of this city; James A., who died at his home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in July 1882; Robert M., of Johnson, Nebraska; Joseph B., of Chanute, Kansas; and Mrs. Mary G. Tullis of Ottumwa, Iowa.
The deceased was a devout Christian. When fifteen years of age she became a member of the First Church of the Disciples of Christ at Ottumwa, Iowa her membership in that organization having continued ever since. There were present at her bedside when she passed away the devoted husband and the son John H. Fugate and wife. The members of the family who arrived a few hours later were Robert M. Fugate and daughter Myrtle of Johnson, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. Hayden M. Tullis of Ottumwa, Iowa; and Joseph B. Fugate of Chanute, Kansas. The funeral services were held in the Christian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock Rev. L. M. Wiles officiating. Internment was made in the city cemetery, the following acting as pall-bearers: B. C. Parmele,Chris Truax, Dr. J. R. Lowe, A. Z. Becker, L. H. Pershing, and R. M. McClure.
