Lu Gaede, 71, died on Tuesday (Aug. 24, 2010) at the Newton Medical Center in Newton.

He was born on July 27, 1939, to Mary Lu (Gibson) and Henry H. Gaede in Hillsboro. Lu married Sharron J. Johnston on April 17, 1972, in Newton. He had many hobbies during his lifetime, which included playing pitch, drinking coffee at several different coffee groups, tinkering with old cars, and he really enjoyed fixing children's tricycles and passing them on to the neighbor children. Lu worked for USD 373 school district for 26 1⁄2 years before entering retirement. He was well known and liked by many in the community and at school.

Survivors include four children, Chelle Gaede of Newton, Jerry Gaede and wife Gina of Newton, Daniel Gaede of Kansas City, Mo., and Teresa Driver of Carrolton, Texas; two brothers, Virgene Gaede of Newton and Raygene Gaede of Holcomb; four sisters, Marlene Anduss of Marion, Charlene Sullivan of Peabody, Rolene Gaede of Racine, Wis., and Jolene West of Fort Scott; and seven grandchildren, Kirby and Kelly Driver of Carrollton, Noah Cleary of Newton, and Thomas, Jacob, Alyssa and Zachary Gaede of Newton. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Sharron; sister, Darlene Peterson; and brother, Eugene Gaede.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, with the family greeting friends from 1 to 3 p.m. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the NHS Athletics Booster Club or the Make A Wish Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.
