Hackney, Samuel

Samuel was the fourth child of John and Isabelle (Ebbert) Hackney. He grew to manhood in this eastern home and it was there he received his common school education.
On March 2, 1871 he was married to Mary Leckey at Merritistkown, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Hackney came to Kandas a young married couple and settled on a homestead near Walton, Kansas, in August 1871. It was here that the family of six children were born and where the family made their home for 38 years.
In August 1909 Mr. hackney moved with his family to Newton and established a home on Duncan Avenue where Mrs. Hackney passed away May 2, 1919.
Of the six children only two survive, Mrs. Laura E. Plummer of 708 E. 7th, St. Newton, Kansas with whom he made his home the past nineteen years, and Mrs. Nora H. Grove of 120 E. 9th, St. Newton, Kansas. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Laura H. Byers of Denver, Colorado and Mrs. Lydia H. Porter of Emporia, Kansas.
Mr. hackney had been in failing health the past three years and on the morning of January 7th, he fell in his room sustaining a broken hip frkm which injury he never recovered. He passed away peacefully the evening of January 22nd at the Plummer home on E. 7th street, Newton, Kansas.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 25th, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Mabley, pastor of the St. Matyhews Episcopal church of Newton. Pallbearers were: Nelson hall, Guy hawk, Marlin Bartlebaugh, John Graybill, Thomas Murphy and Glenn Miller.
Internment was made on the family lot in Greenwood cemetery.
