Janzen, Malinda

Malinda P. Janzen, 92, died on Tuesday (Sept. 28, 2010) in Hesston.

Malinda was born on June 29, 1918, in rural Walton to David and Mary (Goertz) Schmidt. She married Arthur Janzen on May 29, 1938, in Lehigh. He preceded her in death. Malinda was a homemaker and was Art’s “right-hand woman” throughout their lives. They were owners of the Village Motel of Hesston until it was sold in 1972. They were longtime members of Hesston United Methodist Church and the Hidden Valley Association in Mableton.

She enjoyed and loved people. She often brought home “strays” to share their lives with. She was a seamstress and especially enjoyed making peppernuts for Christmas. She was a devoted wife, and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Hess of Greeley, Colo.; daughter-in-law, LaVonne Janzen of Newton; sisters, Rose Friesen of Newton and Viola Tilson of Anaheim, Calif.; brother, Willard Schmidt of Newton; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur; two sons, James and Raymond Janzen; two brothers, Clarence and Waldo Schmidt; and two sisters, Ann Reimer and Elsie Foth.

Visitation is from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with the family greeting friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. A memorial has been set up for Schowalter Villa.
