Welsh, Maria
Evening Kansan Republican
Evening Kansan, Monday, December 16, 1912
Mrs. Maria L. Welsh answered the summons of death Monday morning about 3 o'clock, after an illness of a few days of pneumonia, at the age of 79, years 7 months. She was born at Newbury, Ohio, May 16, 1833, and was married on February 24, 1857, to Wm. G. Welsh. Her husband enlisted in 1861 for three years in the Ninth Ohio Battery and served full term. During this time Mrs. Welsh had charge of the small Ohio farm and taught school during the winter months. They united with the Methodist church early in their wedded life and were always active members of the church. They came to Newton in 1879, and since that time have made their home here, Mr. Welsh passed away in 1899. They had no children, but took as foster child Mary Welsh, now Mrs. Mary Sawyer, who was a child of Mr. Welsch's brother. After Mr. Welsh's death, Mrs. Welsh made her home with Mrs. Sawyer. She had always lead a very active energetic life, though nearly eighty years of age, she still retained much of the vigor of her younger days, and loved to be busy and to be a help to some one. She was an active member of the Women's Relief Corps. And "Auntie Welsh" as she was familiarly known, will be greatly missed by the members of the corps as well as by a host of friends by whom she was universally loved and respected.
The funeral will held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. All personal friends friends and members of the corps are requested to call at the residence between 10 and 11 o'clock at which time they may see Mrs. Welsh.
