Hamm, Lucile
Lucile Gordon Hamm, 87, entered Heaven on Friday (Oct. 1, 2010).
She was born on April 18, 1923, to Howard W. and Nelida Vessot Gordon in Monmouth, Ill. As the daughter of a United Presbyterian minister, she grew up in Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Washington. She attended Sterling College from 1940 to 1942, and nursing school in Boise, Idaho, from 1942 to 1945. While at Sterling College, she met Orval L. Hamm, who graduated from Sterling College in 1943. He attended The University of Kansas Medical School and served as a medic in World War II. They were married on June 7, 1946, in Canon City, Colo.
They served as medical missionaries under the Presbyterian Church for three years in Assuit, Egypt, and for 33 years in Sialkot, Pakistan. They retired to Newton in 1988, where they were active in Health Ministries and in First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her sons, David (Janet) Hamm of Lafayette, Colo., and Glenn (Peggy) Hamm, M.D., of Franklin, Pa.; daughters, Kathy (Dan) Pauls of Topeka, Patty Cook of Wichita, and Suzi (Lindy) Smith of Wichita; brother, Robert Gordon of Sterling, sister-in-law, Vina (Elmer) Holmes of Plevna; grandchildren, Stephanie (Christian) Krehl of Memphis, Tenn., Jennifer Pauls of Parsons, Melanie Pauls of Chicago, Thad Cook of Wichita, David Cook of Perkasie, Pa., Chris (Megan) Cook of Overland Park, Tiffany Cook of Denver, Michael (Vanessa) Hamm of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Matthew (Nikki) Hamm of Highlands Ranch, Becky Hamm of Boulder, Colo., Joshua Smith of Hays, Jeremy Smith of Wichita, Jayden Smith of Wichita, Elizabeth (Omar) Williams of Wasilla, Alaska, Kristina Hamm of Philadelphia, Mark Hamm of Chicago, Brandon Hamm of Franklin, Pa.; great-granddaughters, Madeline and Morgan Hamm and Carmen Williams. Lucile was preceded in death by her husband, Orval L. Hamm; son-in-law, Terry Cook; granddaughter, Janessa Smith; and sister-in-law, Margaret Gordon.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sterling Cemetery in Sterling. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 900 N. Columbus Ave., in Newton. Memorial gifts may be made to Interserve, with the designation Pakistan Flood Relief and sent to the funeral home.
