Obituary

John R. Huntington, passed away in a local hospital at 11:45 the morning of October 25, 1931. He had been in failing health for some months and an operation was found to be necessary. It was successfully done and he seemed on the road to recovery, when complications set in Sunday morning which caused his death.
He was born in Platteville, Wisconsin, November 19th, 1851, being at the time of his death, 79 years, 11 months and 8 days of age. On Dec. 25, 1873 in the city of Platteville, Wisconsin, he was united in marriage to Miss Jane H. Hatfield, with whom he lived in the happiest bond of wedlock for nearly 58 years. Mr. and Mrs. Huntington came to Kansas in the fall of 1887, and made their home on a farm in Harvey county, five miles north of Newton. A revival meeting was conducted in a school house near the farm, and hear he found the lord as his friend and entered his service. He entered with the First Methodist Episcopal church of newton under the pastorate of Rev. Lowther in the year 1893 and was a faithful member of that church at the time of his death.
Mr. Huntington's life was one of devotion to his family, and especially his wife who has been in frail health for a number of years. He waited upon her with the patience and tenderness of a mother, and his constant thought was about her when he was suffering in the hospital. He will be missed in the circle of his friends which was large because of his genial disposition and his long residence in this county, but most of all by her to whom he was a constant companion and a loving husband. He was the father of two daughters, who are living; Mrs. Daisy Lewellen, Sedgwick, Kansas; Mrs. Nellie Hauck, Newton, Kansas. In addition to these he leaves a wife, a sister, Mrs. Mary Walton, Newton, Kansas and a granddaughter, Gertude Jane Lewellen, Sedgwick, Kansas.
Rev. J.E. Coe of the First Methodist church of this city was in charge of the funeral services held for Mr. Huntington Tuesday afternoon at the home 304 East Eighth street.
Singers from the Methodist choir sang hymns, those rendering the service being Mrs. Chas. Hsrt, Mrs. Oscar Nelson, Dr. G.w. Wise and C.E. Mayberry. Pall bearers were Arthur Parkhurst, Abe L. Richert, Elias Bonham, Will Regier, J.A. Johnson and Fred Diester.
Entombment was in Greenwood Abbey.
