Martha L. Epp, 81, passed away on Thursday (Oct. 21, 2010) at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. She was born in Newton, one of eight children born to John and Marie (Harder) Epp Jr. She served as a missionary nurse for 30 years in Sudan and Ethiopia, with the mission group Sudan Interior Mission, now known as Serving In Mission. In 1987, she returned to the United States. She then taught English as a second language in Wichita for nearly 20 years. Martha was an active member of Emmaus Mennonite Church and Sunday school, and Serving In Mission USA. Survivors include her brothers, Albert of Bakersfield, Calif., John E. of Los Angeles and Melvin of Whitewater; her sisters, Hildegard Goossen of Rhinelander, Wis., Phebe Cressman of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Justina Martin of Leavenworth; along with a multitude of nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Frieda Epp. Visitation with family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Emmaus Mennonite Church in Whitewater. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Emmaus Mennonite Church. A family interment will be prior to the service at the Harder Family Cemetery in Whitewater. A memorial fund has been established for Serving In Mission USA in care of Lamb Funeral Home, P.O. Box 358, Whitewater, KS 67154.
