Schmidt, Evelyn



Evelyn Ruth Schmidt died on Sunday (Oct. 24, 2010) at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was born on May 23, 1923, in Newton, to Harvey and Lottie (Overholt) Zook. They preceded her in death. Evelyn attended Newton schools. She married Menno S. Schmidt on July 23, 1945, in Newton. They were married for more than 56 years and worked and raised their family in Newton. Menno died on May 17, 2002. Evelyn worked as a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, music and reading. She was a longtime member of First Church of the Nazarene in Newton. She loved children and worked in the church nursery for more than 40 years. She loved her family and enjoyed their laughter in the home. She is survived by two daughters, Karen K. Etter and her husband Jim of Newton, and Vickie A. Kochenower and her husband Danny of Newton; son, Larry E. Schmidt and wife Joyce of Newton; three sisters, Luella Haines and Eloise Hoch of Indiana, and Opal Reddick of Newton; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Lottie Zook; husband, Menno S. Schmidt; son, David Alan Schmidt; and brother, Robert L. Zook Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Church of the Nazarene. The final resting place will be at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton. A memorial has been set up for Kansas Christian Home. The family is grateful for the loving care shown to her by the staff of Kansas Christian Home during her time there.
