Obituary

Joan Stevens Wedel, 77, died Monday (Oct. 18, 2010) at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born on Aug. 24, 1933, in Laverne, Okla., to Roy E. and Elizabeth Ann Grimes Shelinbarger. She was an elementary and high school teacher. On May 8, 1954, she married William E. Stevens. He died on Aug. 15, 1994. On May 21, 1997, she married LaVern Wedel.

Survivors include her husband, LaVern Wedel of Newton; daughter, Dawna R. Stevens of Melbourne, Fla.; sons, Derek Stevens of Tampa, Fla., Michael (Cheryl) Griffin of Cherryvale, Virgil (Louretta) Wedel of Moundridge, Tracy (Cecilia) Wedel of Newton, Terry (Kathy) Wedel of Rogers, Ark.; brother, Roy Shelinbarger Jr. of Wichita; sister, Debi Hobbs of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Moundridge Funeral Home in Moundridge. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Church of the Nazerene in Newton followed by a committal service at 4:30 p.m. in the First Mennonite Church Cemetery in Moundridge.
Memorial donations are suggested to the First Church of the Nazerene in care of the funeral home.
