Obituary

Dorothy L. Waggy Whisler passed away on Thursday (Oct. 28, 2010) at Legacy Park in Peabody.

She was born Dorothy L. Waggy on June 19, 1914, in Walton. She grew up in rural Burns. Her parents were Chester A. and Leora Wagoner Waggy. There were seven children in the family: Alice, Bernice, Rodger, Dorothy, Sherwood, Betty and Clyde. Dorothy moved from the Burns area to Peabody to attend high school. She met Quintis (Jack) Whisler while attending high school, and they were married on Aug. 16, 1930, in Newton.

To this union, three children were born: Barbara Lucille, Judith Kay and Jerry Dean. Dorothy was a homemaker and a great cook and did a lot of sewing of clothing for her children. She and Quintis worked at whatever was available during the Depression. In 1941, Jack and Dorothy purchased the Cockley Bakery in Peabody. Dorothy and Jack ran the bakery until World War II broke out. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she worked for Paramount Products in Peabody, making airplane parts for the aircraft plants in Wichita. In 1952, she went to work for Boeing in Wichita, where she worked until 1970.

Dorothy was active in the Peabody Business Professional Women and the group was instrumental in getting the senior center started in Peabody. Dorothy was the site manager at the Peabody Senior Center from 1975 to 1990. She volunteered at the center until moving to Legacy Park in February 2008. Just last week, Dorothy attended the 50th anniversary of the Marion County Senior Citizens in Marion.
When Dorothy moved to Legacy Park, she became a very active resident, taking part in most of the activities offered. Her favorite was going bowling at Peabody Lanes, and she had a high score of 209. orothy was a member of Peabody United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Terra B Circle and United Methodist Women. he played an important role as grandmother to Jeff and David Mellott and Michael Whisler and Michelle Whisler McConnell. She enjoyed attending school programs, ball games and anything in which the grandchildren were involved.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy and Alan Mellott of Peabody; grandchildren, Jeff Mellott and wife Dawn, and David Mellott, all of Andover, Michael Whisler of Houston, Michelle Whisler McConnell and husband Tony of Maryville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Jessica Mellott, Jordan Mellott, Kaylee Mellott, Layne Mellott, Kristen Whisler Martin, Leann McConnell and Matthew McConnell; two great-great-grandchildren, Erin and Madison Riley; a brother, Clyde and Virginia Waggy of El Dorado; sister, Betty McClay of Ottawa; sister-in-law, Arlene Kirchhofer of Kansas City; and many relatives and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Quintis in 1991; daughter, Barbara Whisler Church in 1953; son and daughter -in-law, Jerry Whisler and Carol Ann Bybee Whisler in 1967; her parents; and siblings, Alice, Bernice, Rodger and Sherwood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peabody United Methodist Church in Peabody.
Interment will be in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.
Memorials may be given to the Peabody Senior Center.
