Obituary

Guy E. Gilbert, 81, died Monday (Feb. 15, 2010) at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born on June 11, 1928, in Wichita to Henry N. and Agnes M. (Payne) Gilbert.

He married Mary Pearcy on Sept. 16, 1955, in Indianapolis. They later were divorced. He then married Liyla Masmele on Aug. 6, 2001, in Fullerton, Calif. She survives of the home.

Guy served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a retired schoolteacher. Guy enjoyed reading and music and had an extensive record collection. He had a passion for flying airplanes and held his private and commercial pilot’s licenses. He had a love of travel and enjoyed his time traveling to many countries. He will be missed for his sense of humor and love of his family and friends.

Guy was preceded in death by his father, Henry Nelson Gilbert; mother, Agnes Marion (Payne) Gilbert; and son, Scott Gilbert.

He is survived by his wife, Liyla (Masmela) Gilbert of Newton; sons, Roger Allan Gilbert, of San Antonio and Brian Gilbert, of Mentone, Calif.; sister, Velma Jean Andersen of Peabody; daughter-in-law, Jami Gilbert of Lawrenceburg, Ky; grandsons, John R. Gilbert, Joshua S. Gilbert and J. Carlos Gilbert, all of Converse, Texas, William Gilbert, of Florissant, Mo., and Slyler J. Gilbert of Lawrenceburg.; granddaughters, Jennefer R. Gilbert, of Converse, and Natalie D. Gilbert and Sharayah N. Gilbert, both of Florissant.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Winfield Veterans Cemetery with Pastor Doug Ingmire of Newton Christian Church officiating.

Burial will be at Winfield Veterans Cemetery in Winfield.

Memorial funds may be made to Kansas Christian Home in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
