Glover, Elizabeth

Elizabeth H. “Betty” Glover, 87, died Tuesday (Feb. 16, 2010). Betty was born April 15, 1922, in Denver, to James Isben and Margaret Webster Hollingsworth. She attended Parkhill Grade School, Smiley Junior High, and East High. She was head girl at all three schools. Betty attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, and graduated in 1944 with a degree in sociology. On March 27, 1944, she married Richard Mortimer Glover of Newton.

She taught first grade in Lawrence, while her husband, Dick, was attending The University of Kansas Medical School.

Of all of her interests, her family was her proudest accomplishment. She instilled in all of her children a deep love of togetherness. Betty loved to cook, sew and entertain. She always made a connection with each person she met and was loved by so many people. Colorado held a special place in her heart. Not only did she meet her husband there, but she loved to go to Green Mountain Falls each summer with her family.

She was a member and president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Kansas Medical Society Auxiliary, Harvey County Medical Auxiliary, YMCA board, Women of St. Matthew’s, Axtell Hospital Auxiliary, P.E.O., Junior Reading Circle and Round Table.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, her parents, and sister.

Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Craig and husband, Dr. Charles Craig, of Newton, Meg Henderson and husband, Bruce, of Dallas, and Mary Beck and husband, Dr. Rick Beck, of Newton; two sons, Dr. Rick Glover and wife, Rochelle, of Newton, and Jim and wife, Stephanie Glover, of Oklahoma City; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A book signing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday with family members greeting visitors from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Newton.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial with St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
