Scrivner, Sophia

The Newton Kansan

Sophia L. Scrivner, 89, died on Saturday (Nov. 6, 2010).

She was born on Sept. 15, 1921, to Reinhard and Mary Wiebe Schroeder. Her early years were spent on the farm northwest of Goessel. She attended Pleasant Valley one-room grade school and graduated from Goessel High School. She was baptized upon her confession of faith in 1940 at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel. Following high school, she moved to Newton and worked at Woolworth’s and J.C. Penney’s. Later, she was employed at Boeing Aircraft Co. for more than 20 years.

She married the love of her life, Max C. Scrivner, on Jan. 2, 1976, and they continued to reside in Newton. Sophia enjoyed life and spent many hours cooking, baking and entertaining family and friends. She was a very loving person and cared for her father in her home in his last years.

She will be deeply missed by a nephew, Tim and Kathy Scrivner of Azle, Texas, and their daughter, Amber Cody and husband Lonnie, as well as many cousins and life-long friends. Preceding her in death were her husband, Max; parents; and one brother, Randolph Schroeder.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peterson Funeral Home. Internment will follow at Old Mission Mortuary at 3424 E. 21st St. in Wichita. Memorials to Caring Hands Humane Society, Asbury Park or Hospice Care of Kansas may be sent in care of the funeral home at 215 N. Main St. in Newton.
