Androes, Vernelle

The Newton Kansan

Vernelle R. Androes, 87, died on Saturday (Nov. 6, 2010) at Kansas Christian Home in Newton.

She was born on Feb. 4, 1923, in Newton to Ida (Roth) and Arnold Zuercher. Vernelle resided in the Whitewater area, and graduated from Whitewater High School. She then went on to attend Bethel College, where she graduated from the nursing program. She served 48 years at the Bethel Clinic in Newton.

On Feb. 22, 1947, she married Paul Androes at Federated Church in Whitewater. After they married, Paul and Vernelle moved to Newton. Vernelle held memberships with Swiss Church in Whitewater and the Christian Business Women’s Association. She also served as the camp nurse at Camp Good News near Hutchinson for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Paul of Newton; two brothers, Elwood Zuercher of Whitewater and Don Zuercher of Lincoln, Neb.; and a sister, Mildred Zuercher of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Alma Thierstein.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family greeting from 6 to 7 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Newton. The Rev. Gary and Denny Bell will preside. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton following the service.
