Obituary

Thomas R. McCandless Jr., 81, formerly of Newton, retired carpenter, died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999) at Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Dec. 16, 1917, in Newton to Thomas R. Sr. and Edna (Wolfe) McCandless. He married LaVergne Bachman Jan. 12, 1942. She preceded him in death Oct. 27, 1995. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include: one daughter, Barbara J. Ford-Buell of Wichita; two sons, Thomas R. McCandless III of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Bruce B. McCandless of Billings, Mont.; one sister, June Owens of Kansas City; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Body donated to Kansas University Medical School.
