Jay Carrol Smith, Sr

Jay Carrol Smith, 71, retired welder for Santa Fe Railroad, died Thursday (July 8, 1999) at his residence in Halstead. He was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Wellington to Raymond J. and Thelma Fertine (Beard) Smith. He had been a Halstead resident since 1979. He was a member of Eagles Lodge in Newton. Survivors include: two sons, Raymond Dean Smith of Wichita and Jay Carrol Smith Jr. of Newton; one daughter, Cheryl Lynn Saenz of Halstead; one brother, Billy Joe Smith of Oklahoma; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Max Edward Smith. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Halstead Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kaufman Funeral Home in Halstead. Memorials have been established with Halstead Hospital Intensive Care Unit in care of the funeral home.
