Spencer, Gladys



Gladys O. Spencer, 88, died Wednesday (Sept. 26, 2007) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis in Wichita.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1919, in Meno, Okla., to Benjamin J. and Susie (Unruh) Buller. As a child, she moved to Halstead. On April 1, 1937, he married Donald B. Spencer in Newton. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1998. She resided in the same Newton home for 61 years and had resided in Wichita since 1998, most recently living in the Haysville Community Health Canter. She enjoyed working at the meat and sandwich counter at Boese Market in Newton for several years. She was known by all for her friendliness, smile and love and faith in Jesus Christ. In addition, Gladys was known for her good food, including her special fried chicken, potato salad and chocolate cake. She was especially known for her Christmas sugar cookies. It was no wonder Gladys' favorite holiday was Thanksgiving. She greatly looked forward to spending time with her friends and loving family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include sons, Donald Duane and Marianne Spencer of Wichita and Richard and Jolene Spencer of Emporia; a brother, Eugene Buller of Oregon; sister-in-laws, Marge Spencer of Newton, Sally Seery of Newton, Mary Anderson of Georgia and Virginia Rumplik of Georgia; several nieces and nephews; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Gary Spencer and Larry Spencer; a granddaughter, Lori Sue Spencer; a great-grandson, Riley Matthew Spencer; sisters, Elizabeth Unruh and Agnes Marie Haury; and brothers, Jake Buller and Fred Buller.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
