Grant, Ernest
Ernest Leroy Grant Sr., 90, passed away on Friday (Nov. 19, 2010) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
He was born on Sept. 25, 1925, in Watonga, Okla., the son of Roy Grant and Vera Thompson Jarvis. He graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s specialist in administration. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.
On Feb. 14, 1943, he married Georganna Kienholz Grant in Lucien, Okla. She passed away on Sept. 13, 1990.
After his military career, he was a farmer in Oklahoma. He then attended college and became a teacher at various schools in Kansas. He then furthered his education to become an administrator before retiring from the school system in Attica. Ernest enjoyed bowling, golfing and dancing. Ernest was a member of the Hesston United Methodist Church and various Lions Clubs in Kansas.
He is survived by his two children, Ernie and wife Judy of Bella Vista, Ark., and daughter Gloria and husband Paul Hastings of Emporia; sisters, Ruby Deininger of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Beverly Beckham of Grand Saline, Texas; grandchildren Stacee Hendrickson, Matt Hastings and Lindsee Hastings; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Phoebe Hendrickson; and longtime friend and companion Carole Ewert of Hesston. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Shirley Clark.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hesston United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. A second service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lucien United Methodist Church in Lucien, Okla. Burial will follow in the McGuire Cemetery in Lucien with military rights conducted by the U.S. Navy.
