Franklin, J H

Evening Kansan-Republican

J. H. Franklin, one of the earliest settlers in this section, pased away Thursday, January 16, at 1 p.m. Several weeks ago he sustained a shock or apoplectic stroke from which he remained speechless until his death.

Coming here from the state of Ohio in the year 1871, April 6, he settled on the homestead east of Burrton where his death occurred. It is recalled by other early settlers that Mr. Franklin came better off financially than many others and kept cattle and other stock. This enabled him to "weather the gale" during the crop failures/grasshopper year, and depression of the money market that followed. He had attained to the ripe old age of 85 years his last birthday. Funeral arrangements had not been made at the time of going to press.
