Kurr, Pearl



Pearl T. Kurr, 77, died Friday (Sept. 3, 2004) at her residence in Newton.

She was born April 19, 1927, in Wichita to Ruby Holwagner and later was adopted by Ben and Mabel (Gurley) Lantis in Newton. They preceded her in death. She married Albert Buford Kurr Sr. May 4, 1947. He preceded her in death.

She began teaching eight grades in a one-room school in rural Harvey County in 1944. She lived and farmed with her husband south of Newton for 41 years. After taking five years off to start a family, she went back to teaching at Lincoln Elementary and South Breeze Elementary. She then became the assistant principal and activities director at Newton High School for 20 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include: a son, A. Buford Kurr of Newton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church Missionary Fund for Michelle Kurr in care of the funeral home.
